At this point a lot of attacking wingers will rush the defensive winger that is set up along the boards. This rush throws off the time with this pass and gets the winger flustered, thus causing the winger to mess up.
So tape to tape passing is vital. If you are the winger in charge of recieving this pass, if you are about to get checked off the puck, pass the puck back to the defensemen that passed you the puck and allow him to act as the winger during the break-out and you fall back and play defense.
Take a look at this picture below...

During the face-off process, the centerman will win the puck back to the defensemen set up behind on the goal line. This defensemen will move the puck from the strong side to the weak side. When this happens, the two attacking defensemen out at the point will move across the point zones and fall into position to keep the puck from exiting the zone.
Now, the key to a successful break out is to get these two attacking defensmen to move off the blue line and into the neutral zone. To accomplish this, it's important to get the off winger (L) to over load the zone as in the picture above.
Here you will see that the two defensemen have moved over and the off winger (L) needs to pass on the inside of the far attacking defensemen and up between the two defensemen at the point.
Once he crosses in front of the attacking defensemen, they will see this player making the move and they will pull off the line in order to cover this player. Now, what will this do for you during the break-out?
This overload will allow the near winger that is about to get the pass, the opportunity to receive the puck and pass the puck to the center or the off winger overloading the zone. He can also angle his stick so that when the puck hits his blade, the puck can glance off the blade and out between the two defensemen. This is known as a "Kiss Pass".
Timing in this type of pass is critical and must be practiced over and over again to make sure that the timing is perfect. However, the key to a successful break-out this the off winger overloading the zone!
